The term “mining” defines the process of extracting valuable minerals or other geological substances from the earth, usually from an ore body, vein, or seam. Materials commonly recovered by mining include bauxite, coal, copper, gold, silver, diamonds, iron, nickel, lead, manganese, magnesium, phosphate, platinum, rock salt, tin, titanium, uranium, and zinc. Other highly useful materials that are mined include sand, clay, gravel, cinder, granite, and limestone. Mining takes place in one of two basic forms: surface mining, and sub-surface mining. All mining requires the use of specialized mining equipment and supplies. Mining equipment and supplies can be obtained from a variety of retail sources.
